Parks, gardens and horticulture

With three arboretums and seven listed ‘remarkable gardens' in the Loiret alone, it is not hard to see why the Loire valley is often called ‘France's Garden'. Botanical gardens, landscaped parks, French and English style gardens... from hidden horticultural paradises to the grand scale of the arboretums, lovers of parks and gardens will be enchanted by the range of species and varieties to be found in these elegant havens of peace.

Parc du château de Chamerolles

In Chamerolles for example, visitors can marvel at the luxurious greenery which surrounds the Château, or visit an oasis of calm and natural beauty in the centre of town, at the 35-hectare Parc Floral centred around the source of the Loiret, or soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the scent of flowers on the breeze in a pavilion of the romantic Jardins de Roquelin, or explore an 18th-century kitchen garden at the Château de la Bussière before taking in the sumptuous collections of the Ilex national conservatory or the Grandes Bruyères arboretum. And that's not all: for total immersion in the world of trees and plants, Arbofolia is a must...

Since 1997, the regional authorities have set aside eight sensitive natural areas to create departmental parks where residents and visitors can walk; learn about nature and help to preserve our natural heritage. The parks are: Meung-sur-Loire (Les Mauves), Châteauneuf-sur-Loire (qui va être étendu), Sully-sur-Loire, Cerdon (Etang du Puits), Briare (Trousse-Bois), Ardon (Les Dolines de Limère) and the Puiseaux and Vernisson prairie park (opened summer 2011) in the heart of Montargis, dedicated to wildlife observation.

Fleurs

Gardens are not the only place where the Loiret's rich horticultural tradition is on display: look out for the countless flower-bedecked gardens, streets and whole villages which you'll find throughout the département.
