A landscape shaped by the water

The Loiret leads into the UNESCO-listed Loire Valley, where vast expanses of plains and forests line Europe's last great wild river.

The Loire acts as a natural guide, leading you on a journey of discovery through this section of France's largest World Heritage Site - the section between Sully-sur-Loire in the Loiret department and Chalonnes-sur-Loire in Maine-et-Loire.

As it winds its way between alluvial forests and golden brown sand banks, past untouched natural islands and historic quays, the Loire defines the landscape and lifestyle of the towns and villages which lie scattered along its path. In places slow and peaceful, in others troubled and tumultuous, the shimmering waters of the royal river reflect the glorious colours of the sky as the sun sets over the lakes of Sologne and the great forest of Orléans.

This riverside landscape is home to a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna, with an unspoilt bucolic splendour which enchants the senses as you stroll or sail along the famous Orléans, Loing, Briare and Loire canals... Scenes of pristine natural beauty interspersed with festive events and attractions such as the Caravane de Loire and the Festival de Loire, showcasing the traditional craft which use to navigate the Loire (barges, canal boats, rafts, scows).
