Architectural heritage

The region is also home to an astonishing array of religious landmarks: The Basilica of Cléry-Saint-André Basilica with its ties to Louis XI, the famous Saint Croix Cathedral of Orléans, the Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire Abbey (a Romanesque masterpiece) or the Carolingian Oratory at Germigny-des-Prés - to name just a few of the most well-known attractions... let the visiting begin!

The history of France and the Loire - Valley of the Kings - is reflected in the landscape of the Loiret. The rich architectural heritage includes some of the finest achievements of the middle ages, such as the Château de Yèvre-le-Châtel or the Châteaux of Sully-sur-Loire and Meung-sur-Loire. The Renaissance produced its own share of wonders, such as the Châteaux of Chamerolles and Gien. Later on, the Châteaux of La Ferté-Saint-Aubin and La Bussière would reflect the passion and character of their owners.

A host of architectural marvels which are matched by a rich tapestry of religious monuments, remarkable testaments to the faith of their creators: basilicas at Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire and Cléry-Saint-André, the Carolingian oratory at Germigny-des-Prés, the abbatial church of Ferrières-en-Gâtinais, not forgetting the imposing Saint Croix Cathedral in Orléans.

Art lovers, history enthusiasts, collectors, curious newcomers - the Loiret's museums have something for everybody. From the masterpieces of western painting and drawing which adorn the walls of the museums of Orléans and Montargis to the pottery of Gien and enamel wonders of Briare.

The arts of the circus are celebrated in Artenay and Dampierre-en-Burly, bees have their own museum in Château-Renard, the sailors and craft of the Loire are feted at Châteauneuf-sur-Loire... an embarrassment of riches which you can discover for yourself as you wander your way through a region which is justifiably proud of its history, its traditions and its skills.
